Strikers Win CRUSA/FC Bucks Invitational in U-11 Debut

For the new U-11 West-Mont Strikers not only was a debut of a new team for the 2010-11 season, it was also a debut of new uniforms. Gone were the Stripes of West-Mont past, but not gone, was the play that propelled this team last spring to the EPYSA Challenge Cup final. The Strikers ended up Champions of the premier division of this one-day Invitational against a high quality group of teams.

The first game slated the Strikers against a very strong Buckingham Wave team. The Wave applied pressure right from the tap, and despite excellent shots, goalie Leslie Adams was there to save the day early. The Wave however would not be denied and jumped out to an early  1-0 lead. The Strikers responded before half when Kelly Franz fed Mackenzie Mitchell with a “one-touch pass” that she slid by the goalie for a 1-1 tie at half. The second half the Strikers awoke,  and pushed the pace of play with excellent defensive pressure from KK O’Donnell, Bergen Bycoskie, and Katie Byrd. The Midfielders ( Kayla Mesaros , Brooke Ritchie and Allison Cappeli ) continued to make fine crossing passes, and Cappelli placed an excellent “through ball” ahead to Kelly Franz for the go ahead goal. The final goal came on a cross from Mackenzie Mitchell to Elly Bycoskie who ripped a shot off a defender and into the goal for a 3-1 final score.

Game two had the Strikers facing last fall’s undefeated PAGS champions,  the CRUSA Attack. Despite a strong  start by the Strikers, they didn’t put one on the scoreboard early. The Attack however made the most of their first shot, and took an early 1-0 lead. Allison Cappelli then took a pass from Bergen Bycoski and Mackenzie Mitchell, and hit a precise shot by a multitude of players for a 1-1 tie. As the second half wore on the Strikers got stronger, and that  extra stamina led to more chances. The pressure again was due to the excellent defense (by O’Donnell, Christman, Byrd, and Ritchie). The game winner came with 5 minutes remaining on a tremendous punt by goalie Leslie Adams to Kelly Franz who bent an amazing angled shot into the net for the game winner. Excellent scoring attempts and plays were also made all game by Elly Bycoski as well as Kayla Mesaros.

The final game had the West-Mont Strikers playing the Lower Mac. Strikers . West-Mont Strikers started out strong , and never looked back netting 4 goals in the first half for a 4- 0 lead. The first goal was an unassisted ball hammered in by Bergen Bycoski for a 1-0 lead. Katie Byrd got into the scoring column crashing the goal for the second goal of the game. Mackenzie Mitchell then hit a sliding goal into the top 90 for goal number three. Goal four came by way of Striker Kelly Franz who got free after some precise passes by Mackenzie Mitchell and Kayla Mesaros ( Mesaros also had two other assists on goal #2 and #3 of the first half). In the second half Lesie Adams scored  with assists going to Mackenzie Mitchell and Allie Christman. Allison Cappelli finished the scoring with a great hustle play, outrunning a Lower Mac defender after a great lead pass from Kelly Franz. Excellent play and hustle was also displayed all game by Brooke Ritchie, Bergen Bycoski, KK O’Donnell and Elly Bycoski en route to the 6-0 victory.

MVP’s selected by the opposing coaches for the game were : Game 1 -Leslie Adams, Game 2- Bergen Bycoski, and  Game 3- Mackenzie Mitchell.

Great job Strikers way to kick off the U-11 season  as Champions!

U-10 Strikers Are Finalists in the 2010 EPYSA Challenge Cup!
Every spring the elite Eastern PA Soccer teams gear up for our version of the World Cup. While every team wants to make it to the “big game”,  only those who are playing at the top of their game, week in and week out can make it. That is exactly what the West-Mont Girls U-10 Strikers did in late March.
The Strikers started State Cup bracket play with a decisive win 4-0 win against PA Rush Nike in week 1. That game was followed by a commanding win on the pitch ,but not on the scoreboard, against the Parkland Rockets. While the Strikers led 2-0 most of the game, a late goal made for an exciting last few minutes. The last week of bracket play saw a gritty FC Revolution team battle the Strikers hard to a 2-2 decision. It was a game that had a non-goal miss, counted as a goal in the last seconds for FC Rev.. Once again this made for another exciting finish! The Strikers however seemed to be picking up steam and did enough to insure a spot in the Sweet 16.
The Sweet 16 game had the Strikers on the road to play a W.Lehigh team that had posted an amazing Fall record. The Strikers arrived ready for a battle , and put together possibly their most dominate game all season. The Strikers were crashing the net, and hitting each other with precision passing en route to a 6-0 win. Elly Bycoskie and Mackenzie Mitchell each netted two goals while Allison Cappelli and Kelly Franz each scored, while midfielder Caroline Winters provided an excellent assist on Franz's goal.
The Elite 8 round had the Strikers on the road again. This time on a soggy wet afternoon in Bucks County vs. the Buckingham Wave. The Wave brought everything they had, but the mighty Striker defense owned their own 18, and kept the Wave at bay with a 2-0 win. The defense was lead by Bergen Bycoskie, KK O’Donnell, Kalie Kratz, Allie Christman, and Codi Wilkinson all of who played spectacular, with Kratz netting the game winner in the 1st half on a pass from Brooke Ritchie. Kelly Franz sealed the game with a late game goal on spectacular feed from Kayla Mesaros.
The Final Four was now set,  and the Strikers drew the YMS Sparks on very hot spring afternoon in West Chester. The Sparks struck early on an excellent wide angle shot. That only ignited the Strikers to respond right back on a breakaway by Elly Bycoskie who struck a bouncing ball past the Sparks goalie to tie it up. Despite a relentless attack by the Strikers all game, and many spectacular saves by our goalie Leslie Adams. The game went into overtime. The Strikers scored in each session of overtime on awesome shots by Bergen Bycoskie and  K.Franz  to propel the strikers to the Challenge Cup Championship.
The Final was a battle against the defending EPYSA champions from last season at this age group , the PA Rush Chargers! The Strikers again gave up an early goal on a defensive breakdown, but responded strong by outshooting the Chargers for the game. The Strikers had quality scoring chances all game including a blast with 6min. remaining that hit off the crossbar and post. The Chargers then sealed the game with a late goal while the Strikers defense pressed up looking for the equalizer. While the Strikers fell short to a deserving Chargers club, they played a great game and certainly gave the Chargers a very tight match. It was a remarkable run that they should be extremely proud of , as there were many teams who would have loved to be in that final. Another highlight was hoisting the Finalist Cup and getting their medals from the Philadelphia Independence players! Way to go Strikers! We are so proud of you for a job well done!
